Academic Standing

The College evaluates each student's academic progress at the end of every semester. Academic standing is determined based on a student’s overall and semester grade point averages. A student who is receiving financial aid should also refer to the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy under the financial aid section of this catalog. The College recognizes three categories of academic standing: Good Standing, College Support Status, and Academic Separation.

Good Standing. A student is in good academic standing when the most recent  Overall Grade Point Average (OGPA) is 2.0 or higher.

College Support Status. When a student’s OGPA falls below 2.0, the student will be placed on College Support Status. Students on College Support Status are required to participate in ABAC’s Academic Support Program, called AIM, as a condition of registering for courses in the following academic term. A student will remain on College Support Status until the OGPA is 2.0 or higher.

Academic Separation. A student who remains on College Support Status for three semesters and has not earned a minimum OGPA of 2.0 will be academically separated from the college for one academic year. A student who achieves a semester grade point average of 2.0 or higher but whose OGPA is below 2.0 may be allowed to continue on College Support Status.

Appeals. No appeal process exists for academic separation. Students must make sure all assigned grades are accurate. If a grade is changed because of a reporting error, the student's OGPA will be recalculated, which may affect the academic separation decision.

AIM is a Student Success program from Academic Support that provides one-on-one academic coaching for students whose overall GPA drops below a 2.0 for the first time. The program requires students to meet regularly (weekly or bi-weekly) to develop an academic success plan that includes study/reading strategies, managing time, tutoring, and career development components.
